Governor Hochul Announces Opening of Covenant House New York's New $76 Million Facility in Manhattan

Kite later contended that Father Ritter funneled more than $25,000 to him in cash, rent money and gifts, while the two were involved in a sexual relationship. "When Kevin Kite first came to Covenant House he claimed his life was in danger," it said. "We believed him. We placed him in a safe-house program. As part of that program, he needed a new identity." To protect him, Covenant House officials sent him to New York, where Father Ritter took the case. Tim Warner and Father Ritter never crossed paths -- until last week, amid reports of a New York City sex scandal. But he has also gathered his share of detractors, including those who say that Covenant House is a monument to Ritter’s own ego, and is far less effective than programs that operate on a smaller scale.

Column: How Santa Monica’s Rape Treatment Center revolutionized the way we treat victims of sexual assault

Sunday’s UCLA counterprotest was organized by the nonprofit Israeli-American Council, which on Thursday used social media to denounce pro-Palestinian demonstrations across U.S. campuses. Two deputies who were assisting private security at the venue arrived soon after and arrested the teenager. The arrest report said they recovered a 9mm handgun and spent shell casings that matched the bullets in the gun’s magazine. When Abarbanel needed to raise money to get the Rape Treatment Center going, women who worked for Lear — many of whom had their own experience with rape — put her in touch with the prolific fundraiser Sandra Moss, who was married to A&M Records co-founder Jerry Moss. Her great innovation, much copied now, was the creation of a 24/7 one-stop shop for victims, with medical personnel, therapists and detectives and prosecutors coordinating under one roof.

Ritter also has acknowledged using $140,000 from the tax-exempt trust to cover his own expenses and conduct his ministry. The trust, which most board members were unaware of, was created years ago with part of Ritter’s own salary. He said he was concerned that his critics would attack him for earning so much, so he used the trust to make his pay seem to be far less--$38,000, rather than $98,000. It also was revealed that Covenant House officials gave Kite a new identity by using the baptismal certificate of a 10-year-old boy who had died of cancer in 1980.

It also marked the start of an important alliance between the Rape Treatment Center and Hollywood. Abarbanel consulted on shows like “Lou Grant,” “Hill Street Blues, “Cagney & Lacey,” “L.A. Law” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” all of which helped nudge the culture away from victim blaming toward a more compassionate view of the trauma of rape. An alleged rapist would be charged only if a victim had demonstrated physical resistance “to the utmost,” as the law puts it.

He has trained with and performed for both the Bob Baker Marionette Theater and the Jim Henson Company. He also served as a campaign media director for a congressional candidate in the 2020 elections. “The Center is devoted to the academic study of Israel and has no ties to the Israeli government,” Waxman wrote. Further, Waxman singled out one of the groups he said is organizing campus protests, Students for Justice in Palestine. A GoFundMe campaign that Carr said was not affiliated with IAC purported to support the UCLA counterdemonstration. The head of the Israeli-American Council, Elan Carr, confirmed Sunday that the group had organized the counterprotest at UCLA, as well as others at demonstrations across the country, and had hired multiple security companies to patrol the Los Angeles event.

Ms. McConville explained that Covenant House was dealing with a small youth group who were not prepared at this time of their lives to change their lifestyles. In six years of operation in Toronto, she said, they have helped over 15,000 kids who were disconnected from society. A third of these kids are involved in prostitution, drugs, and petty theft and are “too far gone to be helped,” she added.

He denied the charges and was cleared of criminal wrongdoing, but an internal probe concluded he tried to lure 15 young men into sex acts and used charitable funds to set up a secret $1 million trust. In response to the allegations, the city’s Economic Development Corporation has slowed the process of selecting a developer for a project that is to include a new national headquarters for Covenant House. Covenant House survived under new leadership, and continues to serve homeless and runaway youth. Ritter’s team put Kevin Kite’s estranged father on TV to state that his son had a “history of lying.” When the investigation seemed stalled, The New York Times editorialized that Morgenthau was subjecting Ritter to a “slow bleed” that could be “ruinous” to Covenant House and its good works. Ritter founded Covenant House in 1972 as a small facility for homeless teens in the crime- and drug-ravaged East Village.

If a victim hadn’t fought back and gotten injured, she couldn’t credibly claim she was raped. To inquire about living at Covenant House, you can walk through the front door and speak with the staff. Myles, who goes by the stage name Myles T. Jordan, is one of more than a hundred young people ages 18 to 21 living at the brand new Covenant House on West 41st Street in Hell's Kitchen.

Father Ritter resigned from the agency in 1990 amid allegations that he had sexual relationships with young men at the shelter and concerns about a secret trust fund, although after four investigations, he was never charged with a crime. In 1991, a lawsuit filed by one accuser was thrown out because the statute of limitations had expired. The New York Times reported that a third man, Darryl Bassile, 31, had approached the paper in mid-January to say he too had had sexual relations with Ritter when a youth. He had complained earlier to the Franciscan friary in Union City, New Jersey, after he heard of Kite's charges, and it started an investigation. A fourth accusation was made by Paul Johnson, 33, an admitted felon who claimed that he was involved with Ritter for six years. At least 11 Minneapolis police officers were disciplined following the unrest after the murder of George Floyd, newly released reports show.

The male prostitute, identified as Kevin Kite, apparently was given copies of Tim Warner's birth and baptismal certificates. According to the New York Post, Kite has said Covenant House officials gave him birth and baptismal certificates in Tim Warner's name, telling him that Tim was a child from Jamestown who died of cancer at age 10. Father Ritter said today he was stepping down temporarily amid a flurry of accusations that he had sex with some of the young men he tried to rescue. "I am profoundly saddened by the allegations against me and the need to deny them constantly. I have no way of proving my innocence. My accusers cannot establish my guilt," he said in a statement.

The survey also showed smaller departments with fewer than 50 officers are still struggling with a higher rate of resignations and retirements. Individual departments are turning that corner at different rates, however, according to Wexler, who noted many are still struggling to attract and keep officers. Mayor Karen Bass had been hoping to restore the size of the LAPD to 9,500 officers by the end of June. UC also joined the anti-apartheid divestment campaign against South Africa in the 1980s, after thousands of student protesters boycotted classes, erected shantytowns to dramatize the plight of Black South Africans and prompted a police crackdown and arrests at UC Berkeley.

The regent was not in favor of moving to dismantle protest encampments, saying escalation would be unwise, but added that board members planned to have discussions this summer about what should be the proper time, place and manner of protests. University leaders already have spoken out against targeted action against Israel, including in a 2018 statement by all 10 campus chancellors that rejected an academic boycott and endorsed continued engagement with both Israeli and Palestinian colleges, universities and colleagues. In 2020, UC became the nation’s largest university to divest from fossil fuels, a five-year effort undertaken to fight climate change by shifting funds into more environmentally sustainable investments, such as wind and solar energy. UC sold more than $1 billion in fossil fuel assets from its pension, endowment and working capital pools and surpassed its five-year goal of investing $1 billion in clean energy projects. At previous UCLA demonstrations, hundreds of students, faculty and alumni gathered without arrests or suspensions. At USC, police in riot gear arrested 93 pro-Palestinian protestors, while UCLA sent in observers who kept their hands off students in a peaceful encampment.

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the opening of Covenant House New York's new $76 million facility that will provide housing and supportive services to youth who are experiencing homelessness and survivors of human trafficking. The new 80,000 square foot facility is the first purpose-built facility in the 50-year history of Covenant House serving young people in New York City. The facility features 1,500 square feet of outdoor space, six floors of residential shelter with up to 120 beds, and five floors of program space. The supportive programs include health and wellness services, workforce training, social case management, recreational activities, and advocacy and legal services. In February 1990, Covenant House founder and President Bruce Ritter was forced to step down in the wake of allegations of sexual and financial misconduct, beginning with the accusations of Kevin Kite, who accused Ritter of sexual abuse. Ritter resigned but was never charged with sexual abuse.[6] Soon after, more accusations surfaced.

Ritter resigned from the college, and began a new ministry on the Lower East Side of New York City. He recruited a fellow Franciscan friar, Father James Fitzgibbon, to move to this troubled neighborhood and initiate what he described as a "ministry of availability" to the poor. The Archdiocese of New York assigned Ritter and Fitzgibbon to the local parish, St. Brigid's Church. It had been designated as an experimental parish, in that it was structured around a team ministry. The Franciscans lived in a tenement building on East 7th Street, which Ritter described as a place where he washed his dishes in the bathtub and paid $90 a month in rent.

'Dead Boy' Resurrects Church Sex Scandal Los Angeles Times

USC has been roiled by bitter controversy over the rescinding of a graduation speaking slot for valedictorian Asna Tabassum and the subsequent cancellation of the “main stage” commencement ceremony. Los Angeles police arrested 93 demonstrators earlier in the week, and tension was renewed Saturday after pro-Palestinian protesters reestablished a tent encampment in Alumni Park. “I would argue that most people on this side of the fence have skin in the game,” Fried said, referring to those on the pro-Israel side of Sunday’s security barriers. Across the lawn, demonstrators carried signs that ranged from a handmade “Free Hugs Jewish Students” to pre-printed “I go bananas for Israel” — a taunt aimed at reports of someone with a banana allergy in the pro-Palestinian encampment, now encircled by a protective wall of plywood. The conflict has ignited demonstrations at university campuses across the United States in recent weeks, and resulted in the arrests of more than 700 people, according to various news sources.

If it disappears, they say, there is no other agency, public or private, to take its place. Loken, who never believed the charges against Ritter, said the priest “lived the life of a spiritual hermit” after the scandal drove him out of public life in the early 1990s. ''He lived very quietly up here,'' said Joseph J. Saccente, a former chief of staff at the Board of Education who retired to nearby Richmondville. Mr. Saccente knew Father Ritter because they were the only two who bought a New York City newspaper at Killenberger General Store, about four miles from the priest's white house on Penksa Road. Since Ritter’s fall, predatory priests have since been found to have abused thousands of children and young men in New York, Washington, DC, Pennsylvania, Australia, Chile and Ireland.

He denied published reports that donations to Covenant House have dropped sharply. Despite an initial dip in receipts, “the donors are just so committed to this work that the bad press has not convinced them that this work is not worth supporting,” Harnett said. With such accusations, longstanding concerns about Covenant House’s methods--accusations often dismissed during its heyday as backbiting on the part of its smaller social service competitors--also are getting new attention. But many of the same critics say that precisely because it is so large and has grown so fast, Covenant House has become a vital and all but irreplaceable resource. In the last few years, they note, it has improved its core program, hired more professionally trained staff members and begun ambitious experiments.

CHNY partners with the local colleges and universities, including the City University of New York and State University of New York system, for its CovWorks program. In 2021, 497 youth interacted with CovWorks, with 405 receiving employment help and 215 receiving education assistance. In 1990, Father Bruce Ritter, the Catholic priest who founded the Covenant House shelters, was accused of sexual improprieties with some homeless young men under his care. Although he was never charged with any crime, the priest resigned, and the scandal nearly caused the collapse of the charitable organization for at-risk teenagers. He described many of them as homosexuals who were possibly AIDS carriers, and claimed this provided some measure of protection from them. He said the policy had been approved by the Catholic board of Covenant House after extensive consultations with moral theologians whom he would not name.

Joshua Perry, a boy who had undergone a liver transplant at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital, took a handoff from Garbers and ran untouched into the end zone before being hoisted into the air by players from both the offense and defense. A crowd of 11,703 that dwarfed previous turnouts for the spring showcase at Drake Stadium saw the UCLA offense defeat the defense in a reversal of fortunes given the defense’s dominance during much of spring practices. A Times review shows the LAPD’s academy is graduating about half the number of recruits needed per class to keep pace with Mayor Karen Bass’ ambitious plan to expand the department to 9,500 officers. Los Angeles officials have hired a Northern California-based headhunting firm to identify and vet candidates to be the next chief of police. Student organizers of the divestment campaign against UC said the university’s position would not deter them from continuing to organize. The UC Divest Coalition includes chapters at UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz.

We provided more than 790,000 nights of safe housing to young people in the past year. Counseling given to sexually-active teens, our sources charge, uses the “non-judgmental” approach. If the teen indicates that he or she does not want to change lifestyles, then any health problems are attended to – many of them have contracted any number of venereal diseases – and they are sent on their way. The public must be reassured that donations -- which dropped as soon as the scandal broke -- are used as intended. Supporters should not let that happen to Covenant House, the 22-year-old New York-based organization that spends three times as much as the federal government to help troubled teen-agers with no place else to turn.

"By supporting transformative projects like Covenant House New York's new state-of-the-art facility, we are helping our most vulnerable get back on a path toward stability and opportunity." Your support provides immediate shelter and care that helps young people build on their strengths to overcome their experiences of homelessness and human trafficking. This month, Covenant House’s scandals took another twist when the New York Times reported that Ritter had set up a trust fund of almost $1 million, ostensibly for work with runaways. However, none of the money was spent on programs and instead was used for loans to two Covenant House board members and Ritter’s sister, the newspaper said.

For decades, she has been singularly devoted to changing the way the world perceives and speaks about rape, and to helping victims of all ages heal from the trauma of sexual assault. The homeless shelter has been at this location since the 1970s but just underwent an $82 million makeover. Sleep Out is your opportunity to spend a night outside and raise critical funds and awareness about the youth homelessness crisis. Someone who wasn’t involved in the melee drew a handgun and began firing toward a crowd, the arrest report said. A security guard standing near the gunman wrestled him to the ground and disarmed him. None of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. It said 10 people were treated at a local hospital for gunshot wounds, primarily below their waists. The project aligns with and reflects New York State's efforts to identify and address root causes of homelessness and at-risk youth unemployment.

If we want them to listen to us, even if they’re wrong, we have to at least find a way to listen to them,” said Fried, who said he belonged to a social justice organization and whose former teacher is among the hostages still held in Gaza. A young woman sat shaded by an Israeli flag, blood visible on her scalp, awaiting medical attention after she said she was shoved to the ground by another demonstrator while attempting to retrieve her fallen flag. Private security guards, meanwhile, attempted to restrict access to the pro-Israel rally. At both UCLA and USC, the protests have been organized in support of Palestinians in Gaza, and have drawn counterprotesters to the outskirts of the encampment to rally against Hamas and call for release of the remaining Israeli hostages. At the center of their conflict is the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas that killed 1,200 people and took 240 hostages, and Israel’s retaliatory war on the Gaza territory.

But he cautioned that the think tank does not support lowering standards for training or for applicants. The survey asked only for numbers, Wexler said, so it’s hard to say whether those officers are leaving for larger departments or leaving the profession altogether. He also said smaller departments, which account for 80% of agencies nationwide, were underrepresented in the responses the think tank received. More sworn officers were hired in 2023 than in any one of the previous four years, and fewer officers overall resigned or retired, according to the 214 law enforcement agencies that responded to a survey by the Police Executive Research Forum.

Charges by Darryl J. Bassile of Ithaca were under review by a special panel, it said. Covenant House acknowledged Monday that it provided a dead boy's identity to a former male prostitute, but it declined to say how it had obtained copies of the boy's records. Mrs. Warner said that she has no idea how Kite obtained the copies and that she has the originals.

Indoors or Outdoors Hutch or Cage

Adding an extra level can create a quiet retreat for your guinea pigs, separate from the main activity area. This setup allows for better distribution of hideouts and enrichment features, providing more open space for movement on the ground level. When deciding to get guinea pigs, your first thought might be whether you will house them indoors or outside. However, there are numerous other vital aspects to contemplate regarding their housing needs. Don't put your guinea pig’s cage in an unheated room, breezeway, garage or other chilly location. Place the cages in a draft-free area (i.e. away from doors and windows and on an elevated surface).

The recommended housing sizes provided are for single-level enclosures. If you add another level to your guinea pig’s habitat, you should view this as bonus space. A pair of guinea pigs must have a single-level space that measures around 10 square feet. So, keeping in form with my grass hidey house recommendations, I have decided to show you one created by, yep, Niteangle. As I said at the start, guinea pigs like to chew things, and this hidey house won’t be any different. Remember, the comfort and safety of your guinea pig should always come first, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun designing their living space. With these tips and tricks, you’re well on your way to crafting an outstanding habitat that is both a retreat for your guinea pigs and a testament to your ingenuity and care. Each creation not only recycles but also provides a unique and personal touch to your guinea pig enclosure ideas, making your pet’s living space truly one-of-a-kind. Creating DIY hideouts and shelters for guinea pigs enhances their comfort and security, a project that combines care with creativity.

Responsibly REHOME and ADOPT — the easy Guinea Pig Finder way!

Well, the way I see it, this hidey house can act as two toys for your guinea pig. Guinea pig chew toys are super important as unlike humans, a guinea pig’s teeth continue growing throughout their entire life. Fortunately, being made of a corse and healthy material, this guinea pig hidey house acts as a perfect chew toy and playhouse (two birds, one stone). Now a few of the recommendations I’ll be making are hidey houses that might not strictly be defined as guinea pig hidey houses. The thing is, there are a lot more products out there for other smaller pets (especially rabbits).

If the room or hutch temperature is below 15°C (59°F), guinea pigs can become cold. If it is too cold, it is important to look at ways you can keep your guinea pigs warm to keep them comfortable and prevent them from becoming ill. The type of housing you choose will depend largely on whether your guinea pigs are going to be indoors our outdoors. You will also need a run (preferably outdoors in good weather) so they have a larger space to exercise. We recommend 6ft runs if you can find these, as these provide a good large space for these active pets to exercise.

If you use a container that once held food, wipe out the inside with a damp cloth to ensure it is nice and clean for your pet. If you want to remove any paper labels on the outside or decorate the tube to your liking, you are free to do so. If sewing isn’t really your thing, the fleece forest hideout may be the perfect DIY plan for you.

Guinea pig housing

Consider utilizing safe, everyday items from around the house to craft unique and stimulating homemade guinea pig toys. A favorite among many furry friends is a simple toilet paper roll filled with fresh hay or treats – an excellent way to encourage exploration and nibbling. With basic materials, a bit of imagination, and affection for your guinea pigs, you can craft exclusive, cozy retreats. This endeavor not only saves money but also personalizes your pet’s environment, making their space truly feel like home. The RSPCA recommend 120cm x 60cm as the minimum cage size for 2 guinea pigs (minimum floor area of 8 square feet), and to add 30cm for each additional guinea pig. They are perfect for use in your cavies' cage or playpen, giving them a warm, cosy place to spend some time alone.

Consider easy-to-clean surfaces like perspex windows for visibility, and make sure to create ample space for moving around, hiding areas, and access to food and water. For pet owners who prefer more durable solutions, custom wooden shelters can be built to size. Another idea for your guinea pig’s outdoor housing is a wooden Wendy house or playhouse. These attractive houses don’t usually take up as much room as a shed but can offer more space than most hutches as well as giving plenty of natural light. This larger size significantly improves the living space for these small pets, contributing to their overall well-being. A bigger cage provides more room for movement and enhances their quality of life.

Multi-level housing for guinea pigs

When setting up an indoor enclosure for your guinea pigs, it’s advisable to place it off the floor, especially if you have other pets. The fleece house is a comfy, safe space for your guinea pig to hide and spend private time. That way, your guinea pigs will be exposed to the ambient air temperature rather than the hotter temperature of the floor. Guinea pigs are mostly very sociable animals, and love nothing more than spending time with humans and other cavies. However, like all of us, they occasionally want some peace and quiet away from their cagemates. There are various types of guinea pig house available which provide your pets with the perfect hiding place, allowing them to get some alone time when they need it.

Plastic tubs, glass aquariums and cages with wire floors are NOT acceptable as guinea pig housing. The enclosure must have good ventilation, be easy to clean and disinfect, and have a floor that is gentle on a guinea pig’s delicate feet. Embarking on a DIY journey to create customized homemade guinea pig shelters not only saves costs but also brings a personal touch to your pet’s living space. Let’s explore how you can transform an everyday outdoor structure into an exemplary guinea pig shelter.

While traditional hutches are a common choice for housing guinea pigs outdoors, other creative options are available. Some owners opt to convert sheds or large playhouses, creating a guinea pig habitat within these structures. An outdoor guinea pig will need a strong wooden hutch whereas indoor guinea pigs can have a cage. An indoor cage can even have an open top providing you don’t have other pets in your home. This is a great option as it allows for more interaction with your guinea pigs and makes it easier to tame them. Modern recommendations often lean towards housing guinea pigs indoors, mainly because of the controlled environment it offers.

This is why we recommend keeping them indoors as you can more easily control the temperature in your home. And choosing a smaller cage due to lack of space shouldn’t be an option because this will compromise the welfare of your guinea pigs. They may end up fighting or they can become extremely depressed if they don’t have enough space. Guinea pigs need large cages and housing for 2 guinea pigs (or even a single guinea pig) needs to be at least 120 x 60cm (4ft x 2ft). If you have more guinea pigs you will need an even larger cage.
