He is the only person born on the property who was later interred at the cemetery. As many as 30 men would sit in an 8-square-foot cell with only a small slit of the window facing outward. Once a day, they were fed and allowed to attend to their needs, but still, the house was overrun with the disease. They were put in a long narrow cell to lie on the floor, one against the other. Their mothers were across the courtyard, likely unable to hear their children cry. The rebellious Africans were locked up in an oppressive, small cubicle under the stairs; while seawater was sipped through the holes to ease dehydration.
How to visit Gorée Island in Dakar, Senegal
The first construction on the island was built by the Portuguese in 1482; later on, the French and the Dutch arrived and built more on the island. Goree Island has a shady history, and we learned a bit about the atrocities of the island. Famous for its “House of Slaves,” it has been claimed that more than a million people passed through this house en route to a life of slavery. They were stripped of all of their papers and even their names, as the slaves’ new owners would want to give them new names. Known as the “Maison des Esclaves” (“House of the Slaves”), the house sits atop the beaches of Gorée Island, just off the coast of Senegal. Of the estimated 15 houses that served a similar purpose, the Maison des Esclaves is one of only five surviving, and the only one preserved for historical study.
IFAN Museum of African Arts
The first record of slave trading there dates back to 1536 and was conducted by the Portuguese, the first Europeans to set foot on the Island in 1444. Built by the Dutch, it is the last slave house still in Goree and now serves as a museum. Slaves were kept for domestic use; however, the main activity was to sell them overseas, it is estimated that thousands of slaves passed through The Door of No Return. Gorée Island, a small island off the coast of Dakar, Senegal, is believed to have been a 'key stop for thousands and thousands of slaves on their brutal journey to the Americas' throughout the 16th and 19th centuries. Journalist and athlete Ade Adepitan visits the House of Slaves memorial on the island and its 'doorway of no return' to better understand the conditions enslaved people faced before crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The island itself, resting off the coast of Dakar, the capital of Senegal emits a rather somber vibe, something that more resembles a graveyard than a tropical island.
Gorée’s Gripping Tale: Inside Senegal’s House of Slaves
Joseph Wresinski, founder of ATD Fourth World, visited the House of Slaves on the Ile de Gorée (Island of Gorée) in Senegal in 1987. This island was a slave trade center on the African coast from the 15th to the 19th century. During four centuries slaves passed through the House of Slaves’ Door of No Return as their final exit point from Africa. London — Descendants of some of Britain's wealthiest slaveowners are calling on the U.K. Government to publicly apologize and atone for the country's historical links to slavery. Several British families are leading the campaign as part of a group called "The Heirs of Slavery," which is working to shine a light on this country's deep involvement in the slave trade.
The bill was briefly debated on the House floor last week but support remained unclear. He is a descendant of James Parks, who was born into slavery on the property. After he was freed during the Civil War, Parks continued to work there and went on to work for Arlington National Cemetery for 61 years.
The museum is located on Gorée Island, 3 km off the coast of Senegal. The structure was built in 1776 as a holding centre for Africans waiting to be exported across the Atlantic. According to the original curator of the museum, Boubacar Joseph Ndiaye, the island played a pivotal role in the containment and transportation of slaves to America during the transatlantic slave trade. The aim of the museum and memorial is to help its visitors come to terms with the extent of the transatlantic slave trade and the effects of the trade on Africa and its people. The content of the museum includes murals and artwork showcasing traditional African techniques, and depicting the process of enslavement.
House Slaves: An Overview
That space will also house an exhibition detailing the broader history of the Middle Passage, as well as rooms for students and teachers to gather and talk about what they have seen. “It is an incredibly important historic site, especially for the Senegalese schoolchildren as they are grappling with the historical implications of slavery in Senegal and the legacy of the Middle Passage,” Nelson said. The House of Slaves is home to various murals and art pieces that showcase traditional African techniques.
Following the Portuguese, the island saw a succession of European colonial powers including the Dutch, English, and French, each using the island for various purposes, including as a trading post. It was in an advantageous position off the coast of Africa, with all European powers wanting to be in possession – it was ultimately taken over by the French in 1763. The slave house at Goree has also been visited by former South African President Nelson Mandela. Pope John Paul II also visited Goree in 1992 and asked for forgiveness, because historians say that a lot of Catholic missionaries were involved in the slave trade. This was in effect one of the slave warehouses through which Africans passed on their way to the Americas. To create more educational space, the Sites of Conscience team has proposed relocating many museum functions – such as ticketing and administration – to an 18th century house across the street that the Senegalese government recently donated for that purpose.
Clowning for Novices: History and Practice With Rose Carver
Goree Island is a small 45-acre island located off the coast of Senegal. Goree Island was developed as a center of the expanding European slave trade of Black African people, the Middle Passage. From the 15th to the 19th century, it was the largest slave-trading centre on the African coast. Ruled in succession by the Portuguese, Dutch, English and French, its architecture is characterized by the contrast between the grim slave-quarters and the elegant houses of the slave traders. Today it continues to serve as a reminder of human exploitation and as a sanctuary for reconciliation.
It’s estimated that more than a million slaves passed through the so-called “Door of No Return” mainly due to the strategic geographical spot that allowed different countries to trade through the territory during their expeditions. The house has different rooms, or better said cells, in which slaves were held shackled to the walls so they weren’t able to move. The House of Slaves is a poignant reminder of the island’s tragic past in the transatlantic slave trade.
On this tour, your guide will pick you up in Dakar or Saly, taking you to the harbour where you’ll sail across to the island. Once you’ve visited the House of Slaves, you’ll see other spots on the island. In 1978, Gorée Island was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its role in history and as a symbol for remembrance and education about the impacts of slavery.
It’s been preserved to showcase the horrors of the slave trade to tourists, with some rooms also containing educational exhibits. The history of Gorée Island is despicable, but it’s an extremely important place to visit, to come to terms with how horrific humanity can be. The shipping of slaves from Goree lasted from 1536 when the Portuguese launched the slave trade to the time the French halted it 312 years later. Millions passed through the island and other similar trading posts to work in the plantations of the New World, including America.

The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive on the island in 1444. While it’s nowadays peaceful and reflective, its history is among the most sombre and grave in the world. His predecessors, Bill Clinton and George W Bush, have also visited the island during their visits to Senegal. Today modern cargo ships go past the island, on their way to and from Dakar's harbour. The name was changed to Good Reed by the Dutch and the French called the island Goree - meaning "good harbour".
In response mistresses would often abuse their female house servants physically by slapping their faces, boxing their ears, and flogging. House servants were required to defer socially to the members of the master's family regardless of age differences. Elder men were required to refer to the teenage and adolescent children of the master as sir and ma'am.
The House of Slaves, also known as Maison des Esclaves, was constructed in the late 18th century and initially served as a holding center for Africans waiting to be transported across the ocean. It was converted into a museum and memorial in the 1960s, following Senegal’s independence from France. Buckingham Palace announced only this month that it was cooperating with an independent investigation into the monarchy's connections to slavery. King Charles and his son and heir Prince William have both expressed sadness about those links, including William telling people on a visit to Jamaica last year that, "the appalling atrocity of slavery forever stains our history." Britain's royal family undoubtedly has historical links to slavery itself. Historians say it's impossible to calculate exactly how much wealth the monarchy generated from human trafficking, but some previous kings and queens were directly involved.
His master freed him at age 33 when Toussaint married Suzanne.[8] He was a fervent Catholic, and a member of high degree of the Masonic Lodge of Saint-Domingue.[9][10] In 1790 slaves in the Plaine du Flowera rose in rebellion. On 4 April 1792, the French Legislative Assembly extended full rights of citizenship to free people of color or mulattoes (gens de couleur libres) and free blacks. A house slave was a slave who worked, and often lived, in the house of the slave-owner, performing domestic labor. Goree Island is home to the infamous door which sent millions of black Africans from their homes into slavery to the Americas.
Rights Holder
Perhaps the most sobering spot in the House of Slaves, is the door in the rear of the house leading to the seashore. Known as the “Door of No Return,” it was the door the slaves’ final exit point where, in shackles, they boarded the ships to unknown lands. As Dakar is the most western city in Africa, both the city of Dakar and its nearby Goree Island, along with many similarly placed islands along Africa’s western coast line, became a central locations in the slave trade business. When the French abolished slavery in 1848, 6000 persons and 5000 former captives lived on the island.
NEW —Wild South Africa
There is also a variety of objects such as chains, manacles, and cages which emphasise the brutal nature of slavery. The site itself is accessed via a ferry and the tourism industry of nearby Dakar is linked closely with the island. The key voices addressed within the museum are those of the enslaved; the museum brings visitors into close approximation with the living conditions faced by the enslaved during the transatlantic slave trade. One of the most poignant features is the 'Door of No Return' which is said to be the point where enslaved Africans were boarded onto ships ahead of the Atlantic voyage. Women house servants in particular were both desired and routinely raped by the plantation owner.
Things to see on Gorée Island
Williams and the Earl of Harewood have already worked together on projects to educate the British public about the country's historical involvement in slavery. Joe Williams said if he could speak with King Charles, he'd make the point that Britain, and its royal family, were already off to a late start almost two centuries after slavery was banned across the kingdom's vast, formal empire. British slave traders trafficked nearly 3.5 million Africans to the Americas, but Williams said many Brits today think and talk about slavery as something that happened in America, not the U.K. He has helped to launch the campaign calling for families like his own, that benefited from slavery, to come clean and use their wealth to benefit the descendants of those who were trafficked. In the Silver State, voters will likely get to weigh in on abortion, along with another measure that has been placed on ballots across the country.
The bizarre history of satanic rituals
Despite the bright colorful surroundings, the island’s history is dark. The main Slaves' House built in 1777 remains intact with cells and shackles; the Historical Museum, the Maritime Museum, residential homes, and forts are also standing. Above their heads, in the dealer's apartments, balls and festivities were going on. But even more, poignant and heart-wrenching than the cells and the chains were the small "door of no return" through which every man, woman, and child walked to the slave boat, catching a last glimpse of their homeland.
Tourism
From learning the history at the House of Slaves to seeing the island’s beaches, here are the best things to see on the island. With a local guide, you’ll be taken straight to the House of Slaves and will be able to fully learn about its history. Visiting Gorée Island on a tour is one of the best ways to really engage in its history. Gorée Island was first inhabited by the Lebou people, an ethnic group from the Senegal region.

These Africans were brought to Goree Island, sold into slavery, and held in the holding warehouse on the island until they were shipped across the Atlantic Ocean. They were sold in South America, the Caribbean, and North America to create a new world. For hundreds of years, Gorée Island, situated three kilometers from the Senegalese coast, functioned as the leading slave-trading hub along the African shoreline. Today, it’s home to the House of Slaves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and museum dedicated to educating visitors about the effects of the transatlantic slave trade on African people.

A Missouri Republican introduced a bill that would ban any state or local government entity from spending on reparations based on race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation or economic class. That sparked more outrage among critics who contend that Tennessee’s white GOP state leaders have long refused to trust Black local leaders. A Florida Republican lawmaker proposed a constitutional amendment this year that would have banned state or local governments from paying reparations, but the measure didn't pass. Some free black slaveholders in New Orleans offered to fight for Confederate Louisiana in the Civil War.[2] Over 1,000 free black people volunteered and formed the 1st Louisiana Native Guard, which was disbanded without ever seeing combat. The original practice precedes the timeline of slavery in the United States; inhabitants of the African and Middle Eastern continent practiced various forms of slavery since Late Antiquity. Accordingly, black slave owners were relatively uncommon, however, as "of the two and a half million African Americans living in the United States in 1850, the vast majority [were] enslaved."[1] This event remains a controversial topic among proponents of Afrocentrism.
Connecticut Secretary of State Stephanie Thomas celebrated the legislature passing a measure to put the measure on the ballot shortly after it was approved last year. Connecticut voters will have the chance to enshrine no-excuse absentee voting for elections when they head to the polls in November. The measure, championed by Smart and Safe Florida, was challenged by state Attorney General Ashley Moody, but the Florida Supreme Court approved the initiative to appear on the ballot earlier this year. Voters will go to the polls in November to elect the 119th Congress and decide whether the 45th or 46th president deserves a second term, but there will be ballot initiatives in various states alongside the candidates. Ahead of the vote, Ragan maintained his bill was needed, arguing that reparations advocates want to “take money from our grandchildren's pockets as a judgement for someone else's great-great-grandfather's actions." As the TSU fallout increased, House members appeared hesitant to hold a potentially explosive debate over reparations.

The small, beautiful island of Goree just off the west coast of Senegal, Africa was a main shipping port for West African slaves sold to the Americas. It is said that more than 2 to 3 million West African slaves were brought here to be fattened up and sold into the American slave trade. This African land mass played an important part in the early days of African history in south, central and north America.
Pépin, the house’s owner, was part of a class of mixed-race women who oversaw the slave trade on Gorée Island. These women, known as signores, were typically daughters of French slave captains and African women. They could inherit wealth and property, and many used that power to buy and sell slaves, along with other goods bound for Europe and the Americas. Nelson has spent years researching and restoring sites related to the slave trade and studying slavery at UVA as part of the President’s Commission on Slavery and the University. Roughly 250 years ago, Madame Anna Colas Pépin presided over what has become one of the most notorious links in the French slave trade in Senegal.

Kite later contended that Father Ritter funneled more than $25,000 to him in cash, rent money and gifts, while the two were involved in a sexual relationship. "When Kevin Kite first came to Covenant House he claimed his life was in danger," it said. "We believed him. We placed him in a safe-house program. As part of that program, he needed a new identity." To protect him, Covenant House officials sent him to New York, where Father Ritter took the case. Tim Warner and Father Ritter never crossed paths -- until last week, amid reports of a New York City sex scandal. But he has also gathered his share of detractors, including those who say that Covenant House is a monument to Ritter’s own ego, and is far less effective than programs that operate on a smaller scale.
Column: How Santa Monica’s Rape Treatment Center revolutionized the way we treat victims of sexual assault
Sunday’s UCLA counterprotest was organized by the nonprofit Israeli-American Council, which on Thursday used social media to denounce pro-Palestinian demonstrations across U.S. campuses. Two deputies who were assisting private security at the venue arrived soon after and arrested the teenager. The arrest report said they recovered a 9mm handgun and spent shell casings that matched the bullets in the gun’s magazine. When Abarbanel needed to raise money to get the Rape Treatment Center going, women who worked for Lear — many of whom had their own experience with rape — put her in touch with the prolific fundraiser Sandra Moss, who was married to A&M Records co-founder Jerry Moss. Her great innovation, much copied now, was the creation of a 24/7 one-stop shop for victims, with medical personnel, therapists and detectives and prosecutors coordinating under one roof.

Ritter also has acknowledged using $140,000 from the tax-exempt trust to cover his own expenses and conduct his ministry. The trust, which most board members were unaware of, was created years ago with part of Ritter’s own salary. He said he was concerned that his critics would attack him for earning so much, so he used the trust to make his pay seem to be far less--$38,000, rather than $98,000. It also was revealed that Covenant House officials gave Kite a new identity by using the baptismal certificate of a 10-year-old boy who had died of cancer in 1980.

It also marked the start of an important alliance between the Rape Treatment Center and Hollywood. Abarbanel consulted on shows like “Lou Grant,” “Hill Street Blues, “Cagney & Lacey,” “L.A. Law” and “Grey’s Anatomy,” all of which helped nudge the culture away from victim blaming toward a more compassionate view of the trauma of rape. An alleged rapist would be charged only if a victim had demonstrated physical resistance “to the utmost,” as the law puts it.
He has trained with and performed for both the Bob Baker Marionette Theater and the Jim Henson Company. He also served as a campaign media director for a congressional candidate in the 2020 elections. “The Center is devoted to the academic study of Israel and has no ties to the Israeli government,” Waxman wrote. Further, Waxman singled out one of the groups he said is organizing campus protests, Students for Justice in Palestine. A GoFundMe campaign that Carr said was not affiliated with IAC purported to support the UCLA counterdemonstration. The head of the Israeli-American Council, Elan Carr, confirmed Sunday that the group had organized the counterprotest at UCLA, as well as others at demonstrations across the country, and had hired multiple security companies to patrol the Los Angeles event.

Ms. McConville explained that Covenant House was dealing with a small youth group who were not prepared at this time of their lives to change their lifestyles. In six years of operation in Toronto, she said, they have helped over 15,000 kids who were disconnected from society. A third of these kids are involved in prostitution, drugs, and petty theft and are “too far gone to be helped,” she added.

These grants will also support the retention of CHNY's 236 existing jobs and the creation of 25 new jobs. Lend your voice and advocate for the rights of youth facing homelessness and survivors of trafficking. John G. At USC, arrests. At UCLA, hands off. Why pro-Palestinian protests have not blown up on UC campuses
He denied the charges and was cleared of criminal wrongdoing, but an internal probe concluded he tried to lure 15 young men into sex acts and used charitable funds to set up a secret $1 million trust. In response to the allegations, the city’s Economic Development Corporation has slowed the process of selecting a developer for a project that is to include a new national headquarters for Covenant House. Covenant House survived under new leadership, and continues to serve homeless and runaway youth. Ritter’s team put Kevin Kite’s estranged father on TV to state that his son had a “history of lying.” When the investigation seemed stalled, The New York Times editorialized that Morgenthau was subjecting Ritter to a “slow bleed” that could be “ruinous” to Covenant House and its good works. Ritter founded Covenant House in 1972 as a small facility for homeless teens in the crime- and drug-ravaged East Village.
If a victim hadn’t fought back and gotten injured, she couldn’t credibly claim she was raped. To inquire about living at Covenant House, you can walk through the front door and speak with the staff. Father Ritter resigned from the agency in 1990 amid allegations that he had sexual relationships with young men at the shelter and concerns about a secret trust fund, although after four investigations, he was never charged with a crime. In 1991, a lawsuit filed by one accuser was thrown out because the statute of limitations had expired. The New York Times reported that a third man, Darryl Bassile, 31, had approached the paper in mid-January to say he too had had sexual relations with Ritter when a youth. He had complained earlier to the Franciscan friary in Union City, New Jersey, after he heard of Kite's charges, and it started an investigation. A fourth accusation was made by Paul Johnson, 33, an admitted felon who claimed that he was involved with Ritter for six years. At least 11 Minneapolis police officers were disciplined following the unrest after the murder of George Floyd, newly released reports show.

The male prostitute, identified as Kevin Kite, apparently was given copies of Tim Warner's birth and baptismal certificates. According to the New York Post, Kite has said Covenant House officials gave him birth and baptismal certificates in Tim Warner's name, telling him that Tim was a child from Jamestown who died of cancer at age 10. Father Ritter said today he was stepping down temporarily amid a flurry of accusations that he had sex with some of the young men he tried to rescue. "I am profoundly saddened by the allegations against me and the need to deny them constantly. I have no way of proving my innocence. My accusers cannot establish my guilt," he said in a statement.
The survey also showed smaller departments with fewer than 50 officers are still struggling with a higher rate of resignations and retirements. Individual departments are turning that corner at different rates, however, according to Wexler, who noted many are still struggling to attract and keep officers. Mayor Karen Bass had been hoping to restore the size of the LAPD to 9,500 officers by the end of June. UC also joined the anti-apartheid divestment campaign against South Africa in the 1980s, after thousands of student protesters boycotted classes, erected shantytowns to dramatize the plight of Black South Africans and prompted a police crackdown and arrests at UC Berkeley.
The regent was not in favor of moving to dismantle protest encampments, saying escalation would be unwise, but added that board members planned to have discussions this summer about what should be the proper time, place and manner of protests. University leaders already have spoken out against targeted action against Israel, including in a 2018 statement by all 10 campus chancellors that rejected an academic boycott and endorsed continued engagement with both Israeli and Palestinian colleges, universities and colleagues. In 2020, UC became the nation’s largest university to divest from fossil fuels, a five-year effort undertaken to fight climate change by shifting funds into more environmentally sustainable investments, such as wind and solar energy. UC sold more than $1 billion in fossil fuel assets from its pension, endowment and working capital pools and surpassed its five-year goal of investing $1 billion in clean energy projects. At previous UCLA demonstrations, hundreds of students, faculty and alumni gathered without arrests or suspensions. At USC, police in riot gear arrested 93 pro-Palestinian protestors, while UCLA sent in observers who kept their hands off students in a peaceful encampment.
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the opening of Covenant House New York's new $76 million facility that will provide housing and supportive services to youth who are experiencing homelessness and survivors of human trafficking. The new 80,000 square foot facility is the first purpose-built facility in the 50-year history of Covenant House serving young people in New York City. The facility features 1,500 square feet of outdoor space, six floors of residential shelter with up to 120 beds, and five floors of program space. The supportive programs include health and wellness services, workforce training, social case management, recreational activities, and advocacy and legal services. In February 1990, Covenant House founder and President Bruce Ritter was forced to step down in the wake of allegations of sexual and financial misconduct, beginning with the accusations of Kevin Kite, who accused Ritter of sexual abuse. Ritter resigned but was never charged with sexual abuse.[6] Soon after, more accusations surfaced.
Ritter resigned from the college, and began a new ministry on the Lower East Side of New York City. He recruited a fellow Franciscan friar, Father James Fitzgibbon, to move to this troubled neighborhood and initiate what he described as a "ministry of availability" to the poor. The Archdiocese of New York assigned Ritter and Fitzgibbon to the local parish, St. Brigid's Church. It had been designated as an experimental parish, in that it was structured around a team ministry. The Franciscans lived in a tenement building on East 7th Street, which Ritter described as a place where he washed his dishes in the bathtub and paid $90 a month in rent.
